Gladys

Gladys loved her life on the farm: the big open skies, the stars, the chance to see wildlife before it disappeared. And she loved raising her children there, even though getting her youngest daughter’s wheelchair down rural roads was difficult. But all that changed when violence came to their village — suddenly the things that were on the news were happening in real life, and Gladys had to leave behind everything. Now she lives in Bogotá, working in the basement of a bakery. This means leaving her children at three o’clock in the morning, and arriving home after they’ve already left for school. She’s hanging on by a thread when she learns of a special education programme meant for children like her daughter. But in order to apply for the services, she needs better Internet access, documents she left behind, and time off work to do an interview. How can she navigate these challenges with a foot in both worlds?
