Jobs at CSI

Visual Futurist

Full-Time Position
Arizona State University, Tempe campus
Salary: $40,000 – $55,000, depending on experience

Job Description

The Center for Science and the Imagination (CSI) at Arizona State University is looking for a visual futurist to join the Foresight Initiative. The Foresight Initiative (funded through NGA) investigates the crisis management challenges associated with climate change. For example, how does climate change affect environmental resources (e.g., food, water, energy), which in turn affect political unrest and instability? CSI’s role on the project is to design for the future by developing design and user interface principles for constructing locative narratives in rapidly evolving, data-saturated situations and creating design specs for immersive visualizations from text-rich geospatial data. In later years, we plan to develop interactive authoring tools for presenting complex geospatial data streams in various form factors ranging from large scale projections to wearable technology (e.g., Google Glass and smart watches) as well as immersive environments (e.g., Oculus Rift).

Essential Duties

–Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to design user experiences and construct locative narratives
–Design mock-ups and prototypes of potential solutions
–Participate in weekly meetings

Desired Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in design, human-computer interaction or a related field is required, masters preferred. Previous experience with data-rich design research processes, prototyping, data visualization, and user experience design preferred. The candidate must have excellent communication and design skills, as well as strong interpersonal, time management and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and work both independently as well as collaboratively as a member of the research team.
